The Public Isolation Project

A friend of the Good Mod's, Cristin Norine, "will spend one month living within the confines of the bSIDE6 Gallery—in total view from the gallery’s windows. Her isolation will be alleviated solely by digital interactions with the outside world. Viewers of the piece will reflect on their own expanded accessibility that technology has brought them."

Learn more about and follow along with this interesting project on their website: http://www.publicisolationproject.com

"Cristin Norine exhibits: The Future of Socializing

Technologies like social media and smart phones make it easier to correspond with others more frequently, but could these forms of communication replace analog interactions completely? Cristin’s communication restrictions will allow her to explore this idea and determine how it affects her physically and emotionally. "

How Not to Reupholster Classic Furniture

Charles eames sofa compact

Oh no he didn't. We just picked up this sofa compact from a guy who had put there own "funky touch" on a iconic piece of furniture from one of the greatest 20th century designers . Bad move. Faux leopard skin? I don't think so. That stuff is coming off and being donated to one of the many funky shops in town.

Our theory is: when reupholstering any of this mid century modern or clean, minimal designed furniture, stick with something solid or at least not distracting from the form of the piece. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say no faux leopard skin EVER!

We will be recovering this gem soon. Any ideas for materials, textures or colors?
We always want to hear your feedback. Please leave comments!

Also, as always, this piece is for sale and can be customized with the fabric you want. And as always, we are here to help. We have a in-house upholster and on-site design consulting to assist. Come see us!

How To Make Your Own Beeswax Furniture Polish

At The Good Mod we love to find a piece of mid century modern or industrial style furniture in original conditions, but in reality many items need reworking and refinishing. We take great pride in our build and refinishing projects and if you have been to our warehouse you probably noticed our workshop and DIY room. We really appreciate a fun DIY project so just our luck to stumble upon a great tutorial explaining how Amber Dusick makes her own beeswax polish.

It is simple project where all you need is a cheese grader, oil, and beeswax. Click here to read Amber's full instructions:

Stop Motion Fun with Austin Enterpises Chess Set

This is a recreation of a epic battle between 13 year old Bobby Fisher vs Donald Byrne in 1956. Some have called it "the battle of the century". Used here is a Austin Enterprises Aluminum Chess set dated 1962.

If Only Detroit Had More Eeros...

Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was a Finnish born architect who spent most of his life in the Detroit, MI area. He is famous for varying his style according to the demands of the projects. Saarinen brought together many types of disciplines to create new architecture and furniture with the notion of bringing all the different parts together to create one beautiful thing.

He helped to define 20th century post war architecture creating both very simple/elegant (Orthodox Modern Architecture), as well as super expressive and sensual designs. He was constantly reinventing and inventing, while asking the tough questions like "Why does a chair need to have all those legs?" (Tulip Chair)

There is a lot of information and videos on Eero, but here is a short video for you.

Updated Photos

I hope everyone had a great Easter.

We have been busy the past couple weeks, working on expanding and remodeling. It has been an ongoing project that should improve everyones experience at The Good Mod - both online and in the warehouse.

We have been receiving some great feedback from everyone. One recommendation we received was to improve our Flickr as it can be overwhelming to sift through. So we have cut out over half the images - there are still a LOT of photos, but we hope that this has simplified things.

We are also working on improving our image quality - fewer images with better quality.

Please keep the feedback rolling in! One thing we really want to do is revamp our website, so if you know someone that has experience building retail websites let me know. Feel free to email me at thegoodmod@gmail.com Thanks!!!

New Life for the Noble Tree

Check out this interesting video about an auction about to be held by Sotheby's in New York:

The video showcases some of George Nakashima's greatest work for the Krosnick family, including the beautiful "Arlyn Table."

George Nakashima was an Japanese American woodworker, architect and furniture designer born right here in the NW, in Spokane, WA. Nakashima was one of the leading innovators of 20th Century furniture design and a father of the American craft movement.

It is very easy to become inspired by the natural beauty and simplicity of Nakashima's work. We, at The Good Mod, have so many beautiful burl wood pieces in our warehouse and shop. Some already built into tables, while others are waiting for you custom flare in our DIY room.

Chair Stacks

These chairs came from U of P. They were used in 35+ years of graduations consultations congregations and other organized groupings of people in rows. I love these for cheap functional stack-able inter-lockable seating. Sure, they are no knockout drops designs but for $40 each or a package deal they are hard to beat! We had 80 of them but we sold 3 sets of 4 this weekend. Available in 4 flavors.

I hope everyone had a great holiday season and that you were able to find that great mid-century piece you have been looking for. Our inventory is constantly changing and we are excited with what we have in the warehouse - remember we are open Saturdays and by appointments.

I thought I would share this SUPER unique mid-century glass top table. This table has a really cool design with a glass top that exposes an angled book/magazine shelf below.

In amazing condition!
