Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman

I recently watched Visual Acoustics at the Living Room Theater in Portland, OR. It was a great feature and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in architecture and/or modernism.

"Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Visual Acoustics celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world's greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California's modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images."

From Bauhaus, A Visionary Mix Of Art And Industry

I was able to listen to this twice while driving yesterday on NPR. I thought I would share, it talks briefly on the Bauhaus Movement and on, by the sounds of it, a great exhibition at the museum of modern art in NY.

Bruno Mathsson Accodian Table

One of the greatest tables ever!

The form and functionality of this table cannot be beat. Whether you live in a small apartment or have a home with a large family this table has multiple size variations. It can be opened up to nearly 7 feet long or folded up and tucked away in a small closet out of the way.

It is a Bruno original with stamp. Overall in very good condition with minor wear.

Dimensions: height: 71.12 cm (28 1/2) depth: 88.9 cm (35 1/2) width/length: 200.66 cm (6 ft. 7 in.)

Bruno Mathsson was a Swedish designer and architect who, like with this table, focused on functionalism and modernism. He had a passion for building furniture, especially chairs. He developed a special building technique for wooden chairs where the components were bent and glued under the action of hot water. Some of his other well know pieces include: Grasshopper (1931), Mimat (1932), The Eva Chair (1935), Swivel chair (1939-1940)

New Arrivals

1st Generation Eames Chairs (More Pictures).
Many of you know that Charles and Ray Eames pioneered the use of bent plywood in modern furniture. The Eames Lounge Chair Wood (LCW) was designed in 1946 and this is one of the first productions. This chair was made by the Evans company I believe right here in Oregon. Enjoy!

Charles and Ray Eames were American Designers, they were husband and wife who worked together to create some of the most well known and well recognized pieces of Mid-Century furniture.
